Early Life, Training & Spiritual Formation
Rooted in Sacred Calling, Refined in African & Classical Rigor
Born on 2 May 1974 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Segun Oluwayomi grew up in a
musically active Christian home. His father, Samuel Ajayi Ogunyomi, a singer and
professional driver who played the indigenous flute, shaped his early exposure to congregational music
alongside the vibrant church atmosphere of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Sabo Oke, Ilorin.
After attending Saint Barnabas Primary School and Government Secondary School in Ilorin, his formal
instrumental training began in 1989 on the trumpet under Mr. Kayode Samuel (now
Professor of Music) at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Sabo Oke. He had been directed there by his then
CAC Choir Master, Elder Moses Oluyemi Awojobi (now Pastor Dr. M.O. Awojobi).
He subsequently studied music at Nigeria’s premier intellectual powerhouse, Obafemi Awolowo
University (OAU), Ile-Ife, earning a Diploma in Music in
1998. After establishing his proficiency as a trumpeter, an undeniable spiritual calling steered
him toward the saxophone—transforming the instrument into a vessel for prayer, healing, and cultural
testimony.
